Abu Dhabi takes first step towards airport privatisation
16/3/2006

Abu Dhabi's Government has created a new corporatised organisation to oversee airport management, marking a first step towards privatisation of the airport sector. The new organisation, Abu Dhabi Airports Company, will be responsible for operating all airports within the state including the main bases of Abu Dhabi International and Al Ain International. Management of these airports had been the responsibility of the Abu Dhabi Department of Civil Aviation.

Abu Dhabi's Government has issued a set of decrees to overhaul the transport sector and other Government services. This restructuring includes a decree to establish a new Department of Transport which will consolidate the regulatory oversight of civil aviation and sea ports. At the same time two other decrees set out the creation of two separate corporations to manage the airports and sea ports - Abu Dhabi Airports Company and Abu Dhabi Ports Company.

Abu Dhabi Airports Company is being established with a paid-up capital of Dhs 500 million which is divided into 50 million shares. It will operate and maintain airport facilities and infrastructure, and deal with passenger handling, baggage, communications, and other airport services. The company will also be charged with planning the development of the emirate's aviation infrastructure in order to meet increasing demand.
