Airbus is a leading aircraft manufacturer with the most modern and comprehensive family of airliners on the market, ranging in capacity from 100 to more than 500 seats. Over 9,200 Airbus aircraft have been sold to some 400 customers and operators worldwide. More than 5,600 of these have been delivered since the company first entered the market in the early seventies.

A truly global company, Airbus employs around 54,000 people of some 80 different nationalities in design and manufacturing facilities in France, Germany, the UK, and Spain, as well as subsidiaries in the U.S., China, Japan, and in the Middle East. Airbus also has an engineering centre in India specialising in high end design.

The Airbus Family of aircraft are packed with innovative technology such as fly by wire, and are built using the latest weight saving materials. Airbus aircraft are designed to deliver unbeatable operating economics and passenger comfort whilst at the same time responding to today’s environmental concerns through low emissions and high fuel efficiency.

Airbus’ market share is around half of all new orders placed worldwide each year. Airbus remains dedicated to working in partnership with customers to help them get the best out of their aircraft fleet. In the Arab world, Airbus is the most popular choice amongst carriers where most airlines have made them the foundation of their fleet modernisation.

ATR: The optimal choice for short haul route
Toulouse, Southern France-based regional aircraft manufacturer ATR is the reference in the 50 to 74-seat turboprop market. Its ATR 42 and ATR 72 are the perfect solution on short-haul routes around the world. ATR has become the leader in its category by offering a high-performance, reliable, easy-to-maintain and comfortable aircraft to airlines operating on the regional air transport market, at a cost well below that of its competitors. The ATR aircraft have the lowest seat mile costs on short haul routes.

ATR launched, in late 2007, the ATR ‘–600 series’, the latest generation of the ATR family of aircraft. The new ATR 42-600 and ATR 72-600, which will be progressively introduced in 2011, feature the latest technological enhancements, while building upon the well-known advantages of the current ‘–500 series’ aircraft, namely its high efficiency, proven dispatch reliability, commonality and low fuel burn and operating cost. The ‘-600 series’ include, among other innovations, an enhanced cockpit equipped with upgraded avionics instrumentation and new PW 127 M engines with increased power rating.

An important feature of the ATR family is the high degree of commonality between the ATR 42 and ATR 72. They have the same fuselage cross section, use the same basic systems, share the same engines and propellers as well as the same cockpit.

140 operators worldwide currently operate ATRs in about 80 countries. ATR benefits from the experience and know-how of two of the major leading European aerospace industries, Alenia Aeronautica (Finmeccanica group) and EADS, who each have a 50% share in the ATR programme. ATR reached in 2008 an annual turnover record of US $ 1.3 billion, almost doubled since 2006 (US $ 700 million). Since the beginning of the programme, ATR has sold 985 aircraft (422 ATR 42s and 563 ATR 72s) and has delivered 826 (403 ATR 42s and 423 ATR 72s), thus posting a current backlog of 159 aircraft.

CFM:  The Power of Flight

CFM International (CFM) is a 50/50 was formed as joint company between Snecma (SAFRAN Group) of France and General Electric Company of the United States in 1974.  The collaboration was founded on a desire by both companies to gain a share of the short-to-medium range aircraft market, dominated in the early 1970s by low bypass engines. The agreement that established CFM calls for the two parent companies to share everything equally, from design and development to production and support.  Final engine assembly is performed both at GE facilities in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, and at Snecma facilities in Villaroche, France.

Today, CFM is the world’s leading supplier of commercial transport jet engines with firm orders for more than 25,000 engines.  The nearly 20,000 CFM56 engines in service with 500 operators and the fleet has accumulated nearly 450 million flight hours powering more than 8,000 commercial and military aircraft worldwide as the most reliable engines in the air. .  In 2008, the two parent companies signed an agreement that extends the partnership through the year 2040.

In 2008, CFM launched LEAP-X, an entirely new baseline turbofan engine to power future replacements for current narrow-body aircraft.  This engine, which represents the single largest technology investment in the company’s history, will incorporate revolutionary technologies developed over the last three years as part of the LEAP56 technology acquisition program.

The first full demonstrator engine is scheduled to run in 2012, and LEAP-X could be certified by 2016.  This advanced new turbofan will reduce the engine contribution to aircraft fuel burn by up to 16 percent compared to current CFM56 Tech Insertion engines that power Airbus A320 and Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft.  Additional fuel burn improvements will be achieved once this engine is paired with new aircraft technology. Commercial applications include Airbus A318, A319, A320, and A321 commercial aircraft, the A318 Elite and A319 Corporate Jet, and the long-range, four-engine A340-200 and -300.  The CFM56-5 family has been chose to power more than 55 percent of all A320 family aircraft in service or on order.

The CFM56-3 is the exclusive powerplant for the Boeing Classic 737-300/-400/-500 and nearly 2,000 were delivered during the production run.  In 1993, Boeing selected the CFM56-7B to be the sole powerplant for its new 737-600/-700/-800/-900/-900ER and Boeing Business Jet families

Snecma and GE have formed one of the most successful aviation joint ventures history, and both companies remain firmly committed to maintaining CFM's position as the industry leader in reliability, durability, and low cost of ownership for many years to come.
